My Story
I used to smoke around 10 cigarettes a day for about a decade. Quite some time ago I cut that down to one or two a day and generally felt much better as you would expect. I thought all would be well and I could have the odd ‘fag’ now and again. However, I soon had a ‘run’ of bad coughs, one after the other. Over a couple of months I felt they were getting worse and I had started wheezing, something I had never done before.
I visited my doctor who said he thought I might be asthmatic. I refused to believe this, but did realise that all was not well. My doctor offered me an inhaler which I refused; the last thing I wanted was to be walking around relying on an inhaler, after all I’m the man that before these coughs and wheezes could comfortably jog a few miles. Things did develop and I ended up in A and E after not being able to breathe properly. Let me tell you, when you’re laid on a bed in casualty breathing with the help of an oxygen mask, it certainly concentrates your mind! …The verdict- Pneumonia!
I remember that my mind was in turmoil, and it wasn't just because of the situation but about all my future plans; moving to a house in the country, spending more time enjoying my family, etc, etc. I decided there and then I was to be a non-smoker for ever; no more fags for me, if I ever got better from this, things were definitely going to change!
Over the years I get the odd thought of having a ‘fag’ and sometimes I get the feeling a ‘fag’ would be nice, do you know what I do? I see myself on that bed in A and E, fighting to breathe, wondering what life has in store for me and the thought and feelings of wanting to smoke just explode into thin air!
Since I became a non-smoker I decided to use my therapy skills to help other people quit smoking. I became so motivated to use my skills to really make a difference to other people's lives. I know what it feels like to be a smoker, and I have a good idea how you might be feeling right now as a smoker. I’m sure that nicotine patches and gum and tablets all play their part in helping people stop smoking, however, I’m not sure that these products provide all the support you might need to become a non-smoker.

Feelings/emotions motivate our behaviour and that’s ‘one road we go down’ on this programme. Patches and gum do not, in my opinion, tackle the emotional and psychological elements of that smoking habit, but hypnotherapy does!
